Color Management in Packaging: Black & Pantone
01. Single Color Black vs. Four-Color Black
In commercial printing, choosing the right 'black' is crucial. Single Color Black (K:100) is the standard for body text and fine lines because it uses only one plate, eliminating the risk of registration errors.

Four-Color Black (Rich Black) uses all four CMYK plates. While it produces a much deeper, 'richer' black, it can result in blurred edges or colored 'halos' if the printing plates are even slightly misaligned.

02. How to Define 'True Black'?
A common 'True Black' formula used by many designers is C:75 M:68 Y:67 K:90. This creates a neutral, deep black suitable for large background areas.

Important Note: Always keep the Total Area Coverage (TAC) - the sum of C+M+Y+K values - below 250%. Exceeding this can lead to slow drying times, ink smudging, and 'set-off' (ink transferring between sheets).

03. Using Pantone Colors (Spot Colors)
When brand consistency is paramount, spot colors (Pantone) are preferred. Unlike CMYK, which mixes four inks, Pantone uses pre-mixed ink to ensure the exact same shade across different batches and materials.

- Pantone C (Coated): Used for glossy or semi-gloss materials.
- Pantone U (Uncoated): Used for absorbent materials like kraft paper or textured cardstock.

04. Practical Application Recommendations
When preparing files for production, always include a comprehensive Information Sheet that specifies the customer name, structure, dimensions, and technical requirements.

Ensure that die-cut lines, crease lines, and bleed lines are correctly identified and assigned to non-printing spot colors to avoid confusion during the manufacturing phase.
