How to Choose the Right Packaging Material for Your Brand

Selecting the right packaging material is one of the most critical decisions in product presentation and logistics. The wrong choice can lead to damaged goods, poor unboxing experiences, or unnecessarily high costs. This guide breaks down the key variables to help you match material specifications to your actual requirements.

01. Paperboard Thickness

Thickness is measured in millimeters and directly affects structural rigidity, print quality, and shipping durability.

  • 1mm — Lightweight and cost-effective. Suitable for inner packaging, sleeve boxes, and low-weight retail items. Not recommended for stacking or heavy products.
  • 1.5mm — The most versatile option. Balances rigidity and cost for most gift boxes, mailer boxes, and mid-range retail packaging.
  • 2mm — Offers a premium, solid feel. Preferred for luxury gift boxes, jewelry packaging, and products where perceived quality matters.
  • 3mm — Maximum rigidity. Used for high-end rigid boxes, display packaging, and items requiring extra protection during transit.

02. Paper Weight (GSM)

GSM (grams per square meter) determines the weight and feel of outer wrapping, liners, and bag materials.

  • 80–120 GSM — Standard wrapping tissue and lightweight liners. Ideal for apparel wrapping and void fill.
  • 150–200 GSM — Mid-weight coated paper for shopping bags and hang tags. Good print reproduction.
  • 250–350 GSM — Heavy coated or uncoated stock for rigid box wraps, premium bags, and greeting cards. Excellent surface for foil stamping and embossing.

03. Matching Material to Use Case

Gift & Retail Boxes

Use 1.5mm–2mm greyboard wrapped with 157–200 GSM coated art paper. This combination provides clean print surfaces for CMYK and spot colors, and enough rigidity for a premium unboxing experience.

Mailer & Shipping Boxes

Prioritize corrugated board or 1mm–1.5mm solid board for compression resistance. Consider double-wall corrugated for heavier items or long-distance international shipping.

Retail Shopping Bags

Paper weight of 150–200 GSM with reinforced handles (twisted paper or ribbon) suits most retail environments. For heavier items, upgrade to 250 GSM or add a PP lamination layer for moisture resistance.

Labels & Stickers

Coated paper labels work for standard product tagging. For moisture-prone environments (food, cosmetics, cold storage), opt for BOPP or synthetic substrates with waterproof adhesive.

Tissue & Filler

17–28 GSM tissue paper is standard for apparel wrapping. Crinkle cut and shredded paper fillers are purely aesthetic; choose color and texture based on brand identity rather than structural need.

04. Key Questions Before Ordering

  1. What is the product weight and fragility level?
  2. Will the packaging be shipped as-is, or placed inside an outer carton?
  3. What surface finishes are planned (foil stamping, UV, embossing)?
  4. Are there sustainability requirements (FSC-certified, recycled content)?
  5. What is the target MOQ and per-unit budget?

Answering these questions upfront allows your supplier to recommend the most cost-effective specification without over-engineering the packaging.
